Creating a code of conduct\u00a0has many upsides. It:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Helps you think about what matters to your scene.<\/li>\n<li>Creates a reference for everyone about what is okay and what&#8217;s not.<\/li>\n<li>Shows your community you care.<\/li>\n<li>Can help to give you legal permission to restrict access of your events to someone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you write a code of conduct but no one enforces it, you give the feeling of safety without providing actual safety which creates a less safe environment.<\/p>\n<h2>How to write a code of conduct?<\/h2>\n<h3>Find your values<\/h3>\n<p>Each dance scene and dance form has slightly different values. The blues dance scene I come from is all about affirmative verbal consent, but this would be really hard to apply in, say, contact improv jams. Another example is that some scenes default to close embrace, while others have to negotiate close embrace.<\/p>\n<p>Try to list the values and behaviors you want to see in your community:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Verbal affirmative consent before anything?<\/li>\n<li>Clear non-verbal consent codes?<\/li>\n<li>Empower clear setting of boundaries?<\/li>\n<li>Asking if there&#8217;s preference to lead, follow, or switch?<\/li>\n<li>Inclusion of different ages, races, genders, religions, etc.?<\/li>\n<li>Accessibility to folks with disability?<\/li>\n<li>Encourage\/discourage giving feedback\/criticism on dancing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Important information<\/h3>\n<p>There some things that should be included in a code of conduct:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do to if someone doesn&#8217;t respect it\/how to reach out to\u00a0 organizers. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spontanement.org\/saferdance\/reporting\/\">Reporting<\/a> is not easy! Find ways to make it as easy as possible, and encourage people to do it!<\/li>\n<li>What the consequences are for not respecting it. I recommend leaving the organizers some leeway, and using language such as &#8220;the organizers will take action should anyone not respect this code of conduct, and reserve the right to remove temporarily or permanently anyone from the event&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Special clause for staff<\/h3>\n<p>People in power at your event (teacher, DJs, organizers) have an imbalance of power with the participants, and many situation of crossing boundaries happen with this power differential.<\/p>\n<p>Many events now include additional requirements for those positions, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Staff cannot initiate intimacy<\/li>\n<li>Intimacy with participants is forbidden (or forbidden only to people who are younger and who are at their first event)<\/li>\n<li>No he said \/ she said : it is the responsibility of the person in power to make sure everything goes well. If it doesn&#8217;t, they will automatically be considered responsible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You also might want to lay out a plan if one of the staff is crossing a boundary (including you)<\/p>\n<h3>Choose a tone and length<\/h3>\n<p>I believe that code of conducts are useful if they&#8217;re read. I prefer to use positive, happy tones when I write them that gives a lot of examples of positive behavior. The downside to that is it might not carry across the sense that it&#8217;s important, and that there will be negative consequences to not respecting it.<\/p>\n<p>You can also choose to go for a\u00a0sterner code of conduct, which might scare people into acting in ways that do not go against it.<\/p>\n<p>I also tend to think that shorter is better, because people don&#8217;t really retain a lot of information anyway and I think it improves the chance they&#8217;ll read it. Some spaces have multiple codes of conduct with a short version and a longer one.<\/p>\n<h3>The balance between precision and organizer freedom<\/h3>\n<p>You have to find a balance between the &#8220;spirit of the law&#8221;, like <em>No harassment,\u00a0<\/em>that is vague and may be interpreted in many different ways and might be applied through the lens of the organizers bias, and a very precise list of behaviors like &#8220;we do not tolerate racial slurs at our events&#8221;. It then becomes very clear what&#8217;s acceptable and what&#8217;s unacceptable, and can be applied to everyone equally, but lacks in flexibility if someone uses bad behavior that you hadn&#8217;t anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>A way to mitigate this could be to state your values and give a list of examples:<\/p>\n<p>We ask that you do not engage in any sexist behavior in our space such as, but not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demeaning jokes<\/li>\n<li>Catcalling<\/li>\n<li>Sexual harassment<\/li>\n<li>Etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Examples :<\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1p4mPoE3zKI5Vb-O7aQxLaXo-7WP2BMezLe_2XDRZeoQ\/edit\">bunch of codes of conduct<\/a> that have been compiled by the community of dancers started by Aleks Taranov. You&#8217;ll find here the associated <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/u\/0\/folders\/0B_xFy7kzDLqMakNZQ241b1FTZmM\">Google folder<\/a>. Check out her cool <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/standingupforsaferspaces\/?fref=ts&amp;__mref=message_bubble\">safer dance project<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Here is the Elm City Exchange code of conduct that illustrates some of those ideas. It&#8217;s been written for Swing, Blues and Fusion. You&#8217;ll find example of different dances in the links above and in the examples below (click on the names to expand the content). Codes of Conduct are highly cultural and featuring them here is not an endorsement of the text or the community, simply an effort to portray a wide example of possibilities :<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69f778d6da5e2\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"ECX Code of conduct\"    >ECX Code of conduct<\/span><div id=\"target-id69f778d6da5e2\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<blockquote><p>Hi! We\u2019re <b>really happy<\/b> you\u2019re considering joining us for ECX! We\u2019re excited to meet you, re-meet you, and generally dance with you!<\/p>\n<p>During the event, we\u2019ll ask you to participate in making this event awesome by following this code of conduct!<\/p>\n<h4><b>Consent!<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>We believe that <b>practicing consent culture<\/b> creates a safer and comfortable environment. Please, leave the expectations and guesswork at the door, and<b> actually ask before you do something that involves someone else<\/b>. You can ask verbally or not, but ask. Things you\u2019ll get high fives for : asking someone to dance ; asking if they want to lead, follow or switch ; asking before dancing close embrace ; asking before dipping someone. Proceed only if you receive an enthusiastic yes!<\/p>\n<p><b>We will support everybody\u2019s right to say \u201cno\u201d.<\/b> Please help us by taking \u201cno\u201d graciously! Things you\u2019ll get approving winks for : answering a no by smiling and saying \u201csure\u201d; saying \u201cno problem, come find me if you change your mind\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>If at any point you feel uncomfortable, we will support you for : <b>using words to fix the dance<\/b> \u201ccan we get more space?\u201d \u201cplease use less strength\u201d \u201cplease don\u2019t dip me;\u201d\u00a0 <b>walk away from an unsafe dance<\/b>; report what happened to the registration table.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Inclusivity!<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>We value every person coming to dance with us<\/b>, and we want to celebrate the diversity of people dancing together. Please<b> treat people with respect<\/b>, we don\u2019t need those ugly stereotypes when we\u2019re dancing!<\/p>\n<p><b>A great way to make people feel included and welcomed is to ask them to dance!<\/b> Things you\u2019ll get a thumbs up for : dancing with people you\u2019re not used to dance with, such as people with disability or of certain, race, gender, age, body size, dance skill and so on\u2026<\/p>\n<h4><b>Volunteering!<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>We believe in common effort toward awesomeness!<b> Please be excellent to the volunteers and to the hosts<\/b>! If you\u2019re found to be intoxicated, you may be removed from the event for the evening.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Harassment and assault are not tolerated by the event. [We] will give a warning to or remove individuals who harass or assault other attendees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you are experiencing unwanted behavior, please report the incident to the registration desk or one of the organizers. We want you to have a great experience \u2013 and we treat these incidents seriously.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"exp-col-content-holder\">\n<p>Steel City Blues made a longer <a href=\"https:\/\/steelcitybluesfestival.com\/about\/policies\/\">code of conduct<\/a> also on the positive side!<\/p>\n<p>I like this one too from Andante Blues :<br \/>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69f778d6da6af\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Andante Blues Safer space policy\"    >Andante Blues Safer space policy<\/span><div id=\"target-id69f778d6da6af\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<p>Andante Blues is a community which strives to be welcoming, supportive, and friendly to people from all walks of life. \u00a0Whether you have been with us since our very first event or you are here for the first time, we strive to create an event that unites all types of people around a common interest in dance.<\/p>\n<p>We expect all of our dancers and participants to respect themselves and others at all times. \u00a0This means treating others, even those who you may not like, with respect and calling out our friends if they are not behaving respectfully.<\/p>\n<p>We recognize that people are different, and behavior that is acceptable to us may be offensive to others. \u00a0We recognize that we may unintentionally violate a boundary and agree to be humble and respectful if we are made aware of it. \u00a0We also recognize that others may violate our boundaries and will endeavor to be courageous in communicating that.<\/p>\n<p>We respect one another\u2019s physical safety the dance floor. \u00a0Just because we do a particular move or dance a certain way with one person, doesn\u2019t entitle us to do so with everyone else we dance with. \u00a0If we might violate someone\u2019s boundaries, we will respect them by asking first, accepting no\u2019s graciously and yes\u2019s enthusiastically. \u00a0No\u2019s may come at the beginning of the dance or halfway through. \u00a0We have the right to leave a dance at any time, with or without explanation. \u00a0If someone stops dancing with us we will move on.<\/p>\n<p>We will refrain from giving feedback unless it is requested or the behavior in question is painful, potentially injurious, or violates the principles of the community . \u00a0If feedback is solicited from us, we understand that we are under no obligation to provide feedback. \u00a0If we receive unsolicited feedback we may listen to the feedback or respectfully decline. \u00a0\u201cI\u2019d like feedback to be given only during lessons,\u201d could be an appropriate response.<\/p>\n<p>We will be conscious of our space and those around us and avoid aerials and lifts on the social dance floor, even with partners who have agreed to it. \u00a0We will practice good floorcraft, being aware not only of our own space, but anticipating the movements of dancers around us who may not share that awareness.<\/p>\n<p>We will practice good hygiene because it not only benefits our own health, but our fellow attendees don\u2019t want to dance with a garbage can.<\/p>\n<p>This venue does not tolerate underage drinking. \u00a0Regardless of our personal views on responsibility and the law, underage drinking is illegal and will result in legal issues. \u00a0It is therefore not tolerated. \u00a0Underage intoxication, even if it happens off premises will be treated the same way as underage drinking. \u00a0You will be asked to leave, and you will likely be asked not to come back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here is an example in a different style of Tango Forge :<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69f778d6da704\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Tango Forge Code of Conduct\"    >Tango Forge Code of Conduct<\/span><div id=\"target-id69f778d6da704\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<blockquote>\n<header class=\"post-header title-container fix\">\n<div class=\"title\">\n<h1 class=\"posttitle\"><a class=\"entry-title\" title=\"Code of Ethics for Tango Communities\" href=\"http:\/\/tangoforge.com\/community-ethics-code\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">Code of Ethics for Tango Communities<\/a><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<p><span class=\"post-format-icon\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-container fix\">\n<div class=\"entry fix\">\n<p class=\"first-para\">This is a first draft of a code of ethics. This code of ethics is not about the <span class=\"glossaryLink \" data-cmtooltip=\"The codes that structure social relations at a milonga.\">codigos<\/span> or <a title=\"Etiquette Guide to the Codigos and Beyond\" href=\"http:\/\/tangoforge.com\/tango-etiquette-guide\/\">tango etiquette<\/a>. Ethics are a different matter than etiquette.<\/p>\n<p>Community groups and professionals\u00a0are welcome to use and modify this Code, under\u00a0the following conditions:<\/p>\n[1] Give credit: \u201cBased on the TangoForge Code of Ethics for Tango Communities\u201d and provide URL link to original\u00a0<span id=\"sample-permalink\" tabindex=\"-1\">http:\/\/tangoforge.com\/<span id=\"editable-post-name\" title=\"Click to edit this part of the permalink\">community-ethics-code<\/span>\/<\/span><\/p>\n[2] Use some kind of bold\/colorcode scheme to demaracate\u00a0your additions and collect any\u00a0excised parts\u00a0at the bottom of your new document under the heading \u201cItems excised from the original TangoForge code\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A code of ethics has three parts, the preamble which gives it context, the fundamental moral principles, and standards of conduct.<\/p>\n<h1>Context<\/h1>\n<p>Tango is a social dance which welcomes people of diverse cultures, ages, and physical abilities. It is a living art, originating in cultural fusion in Buenos Aires, and now practiced and developed globally. It is also an industry, which does not have professional training, certification, or standardization. Due to the porosity and horizontality of tango events and communities, participants\u00a0need to take initiative in protecting people from fraud, abuse, and the collateral effects of others\u2019 conflicts. Given the use of traditional gender roles and identities, the experiences and empowerment of women are a special concern.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Principles\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>Tango is\u00a0<strong>egalitarian<\/strong> with regard to class, race, gender, nationality, age, and sexual preference.<\/li>\n<li>Tango respects\u00a0<strong>personal integrity<\/strong>, by exercising due caution in the shared physical space, practicing\u00a0formal etiquette and consent, and welcoming\u00a0individual\u00a0expressiveness.<\/li>\n<li>We treat <strong>the experience of the dance as sacred*<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Tango emerges from and continues to develop through <strong>cultural fusion and innovation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><b>Code of Conduct<\/b><\/h1>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The best way to honor Argentinian culture for the gift of tango is to adopt its\u00a0universal, persistent, and unconditional graciousness toward people.<\/strong>\u00a0(Foreigners should be aware that such behavior is considered basic, not superlative, and is the foundation\u00a0of Argentine business culture, so an Argentine who fails to take good care of relationships with a view to future business possibilities\u00a0is operating far outside cultural norms and should be treated with some caution, as an aberrant.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take care of people\u2019s egos and emotions.<\/strong> Tango challenges our physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual capacities \u2013 all at once!\u00a0 We are more vulnerable to criticism and sentiment than in other things we do. The <a title=\"Etiquette Guide to the Codigos and Beyond\" href=\"http:\/\/tangoforge.com\/tango-etiquette-guide\/\">codigos<\/a>are designed to protect egos and emotions. Dancers abstain from sexualized touch during instruction and dancing (unless dancing with\u00a0a\u00a0lover).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take care of the social and physical space\u00a0<\/strong>to maximize the possibility that dancers\u00a0can have an undisturbed beautiful, sacred, and creative experience. This means everyone present shares responsibility for\u00a0care of the surface of the floor, the flow of the <span class=\"glossaryLink \" data-cmtooltip=\"At milongas, dancers are expected to follow the line of dance, circulating counter-clockwise around the dance floor, staying in one lane.\">line of dance<\/span>, the condition of the perimeter, noise levels, and attitude.\u00a0\u00a0Grumpy scowls intimidate.\u00a0Sweet smiles encourage. Everyone dances better when\u00a0encouraged and admired.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take care of new people<\/strong> so they don\u2019t get traumatized and never come back. Ways to take care of new people: Invite them to sit with you, introduce them to dancers near their level, explain the culture and codigos to them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make sure your pleasure is coming from dancing, not from criticizing others\u2019 dancing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Protect the women.<\/strong> Warn women about tango men who have left a string of broken hearts,\u00a0hurt\u00a0their dance partners,\u00a0demoralized\u00a0their students \u2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>Express\u00a0solidarity with your sisters\/brothers in tango.<\/strong>\u00a0Tango can be a devastating experience. You may be having a good night tonight, but you know that another night, in another city, you may be one of the ones suffering. If you\u2019re having a good night, it\u2019s your chance to be sympathetic and generous, rather than taking all you can get. Don\u2019t monopolize a dancer, don\u2019t play dirty with the <span class=\"glossaryLink \" data-cmtooltip=\"The cabeceo is the way tango dancers contract to dance. It is made with eye contact and smiles. Initiated by the mark (leader).\">cabeceo<\/span>. (The cabeceo is not just a repudiation of sound, it\u2019s a repudiation of demand.) \u00a0Note the relevance of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sportsmanship\">sportsmanlike conduct<\/a>, which cultivates\u00a0the virtues of fairness, self-control, courage, persistence, respect and fellowship\u00a0for opponents.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Observe, reflect, dialogue.<\/strong> Tango is a more gender-conventional space than our\u00a0countries, cultures, and daily lives. How much sexism is too much? Participate in dialogues about how much of this is ok-play and when\/where it might become problematic and disempowering to women.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recognize and contain bullies<\/strong>. Bullying is behavior which seek to gain domination by repeatedly demeaning others. In tango communities, this behavior can take the form of intimidation, upbraiding fellow dancers, name-calling and other verbal abuse (direct or indirect) designed to\u00a0disrupt the status and prospects of others. Identify bullies and befriend those who are\u00a0isolated and vulnerable to bullies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t start or abide fights.\u00a0<\/strong>Fights between teachers and organizers can fracture tango communities for years, affecting the social lives of future generations of dancers. Every community should enforce a\u00a0conflict-resolution mechanism to prevent two short-sighted \u201cprofessionals\u201d from screwing up the tango landscape\u00a0for everyone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Responsible barter.<\/strong> If someone offers a ride, housing, or food, the general expectation is that the recipient\u00a0will dance with them (or with their partner) at the next opportunity and thereafter in a rough quantitative ratio to what was bestowed. If you are receiving free stuff, you are in debt. Organizers and dance partners who facilitate significant career moves for a professional\u00a0have purchased\u00a0a long-term bond and will expect to be repaid\u00a0for years. Consider this\u00a0before accepting \u201cfree\u201d assistance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teaching competence.<\/strong> Don\u2019t rely upon (as a pro) or be fooled by (as a student) manipulative forms of teaching such as claims to authenticity, putting others down, flirting, jokes and making fun, or bragging. If a teacher can\u2019t explain how to do something in such a way that the students can do it by the end of the class, they are not competent, regardless of how nice, entertaining, demoralizing, impressive, profound, or scornful\u00a0they are.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you are taking people\u2019<\/strong><strong>s money, take responsibility:<\/strong>\u00a0Teachers need to engage in self-assessment with regard to student outcomes and consequentially to refine their teaching to be more effective. They are also responsible for socializing students to the codigos and hygeine.\u00a0Organizers of social events are responsible for, at minimum, water, attractive\u00a0lighting, and a welcoming social atmosphere.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disrupt bigotry<\/strong> against queers, women who <span class=\"glossaryLink \" data-cmtooltip=\"'Mark' is the word we use in place of both the verb 'to lead'\u00a0and the role of 'leader'.&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;We understand this role as that of a creative artist. He uses his body to mark out forms and energies in response to the music. His partner, the Revel manifests his creative vision, bringing it to its\u00a0full expression, and delights in\u00a0the experience.&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;Based on the Castellano 'marcador' for one who makes markings, 'marcar'. Here's &lt;a title=&quot;Renaming the Roles&quot; href=&quot;http:\/\/tangoforge.com\/renaming-the-roles\/&quot;&gt;why&lt;\/a&gt;.\">mark<\/span>, and creative\u00a0dancers. Withdraw financial support from and speak up for human rights to\u00a0organizers who express negative attitudes toward role variation and self-expression.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Arrogance is not elegant.<\/p>\n<p>Powerlessness is not sexy.<\/p>\n<p>Tango is not a permit to hurt women.<\/p>\n<p>Contempt is not creative.<\/p>\n<p>* About my choice\u00a0of the term \u2018sacred\u2019: The term is now used to refer to secular sacreds. See\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/169556?redirectedFrom=sacred#eid\">Oxford English Dictionary definition<\/a>, entries A1b (\u201cDedicated, set apart, exclusively appropriated <em>to<\/em> some person or some special purpose\u201d) A4a (\u201cRegarded with or entitled to respect or reverence similar to that which attaches to holy things\u201d) and A5d (\u201cDevoted to some purpose, not to be lightly intruded upon or handled\u201d). People have greater intellectual and moral\u00a0freedom to <strong>create their own \u201csacred\u201d moments within their secular\u00a0cosmology<\/strong>, by setting apart specific times, places, events and persons\u00a0and marking their significance by specific symbolic means\u2026 [V]arious forms of performance in the worlds of sport or\u00a0art, can be comprehended in terms of the category of the sacred.\u00a0These forms of behaviour are culturally based on the idea of using\u00a0specific ritual strategies to mark one\u2019s physical and mental self as separate from the routines of everyday social life\u2026 [It\u2019s possible to study]\u00a0the actions, events\u00a0and intentions of cultural agents in specific contexts as they make\u00a0distinctions between spaces, mark them for specific uses, create\u00a0visible and invisible boundaries, and establish cultural conventions\u00a0of behaviour towards those boundaries\u2026[as well as]\u00a0affective, ineffable, inconceivable, mysterious, awesome qualities\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems to me that one thing tango dancers agree upon is that a couple who are dancing are to be left alone in their reverie, the nature of which\u00a0is mysterious and precious. Interruption or disruption of a dancing couple during a song is probably the worst violation in tango, because it despoils the highest possible virtue\u00a0of our mutual presence, the potentially divine (whether spiritual or secular) experience underway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here is an example of multiple length code of conduct by Sundown Blues Dance Society using stern language. We encourage all dancers to dance their preferred role. We encourage all dancers to avoid assumptions regarding dance roles and to check in with their partners about their preferred role.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Harassment<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Harassment includes verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination related to any of the above listed characteristics or traits, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. When asked to stop any harassing behavior participants are expected to comply immediately.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Physical Safety<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>While there is always some risk associated with any physical activity, we are committed to preventing injuries before they happen. Unsafe dancing is any movement that put anyone at an increased risk of of physical injury. This includes, but is not limited to, yanking or jerking your partner around or unnecessarily forceful movement when leading or following (risk of shoulder, arm, and upper-back injuries), bending your partner over during a dip when leading (risk of lower back injuries), sudden weight sharing when following (don\u2019t dip yourself), or any lift where both of your partner\u2019s feet go above your knees. If you are unsure what constitutes unsafe dancing, please ask the host or any instructor.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Enforcement <\/b><\/h4>\n<p>If a participant engages in harassing or unsafe behavior, the event host(s) may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the event with no refund. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact the host(s) immediately. Contact the front desk volunteer or any of the instructors or DJs if you need assistance locating the host(s).<\/p>\n<p>Event host(s) will be happy to help participants resolve the situation, provide escorts, contact local law enforcement or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the event.<\/p>\n<p>We appreciate your assistance in keeping our events and venues safe for everyone.<\/p>\n<p><b>Staff Procedures for Handling CoC Violations<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>In general, consult with other staff members when possible but act when necessary.<\/i><\/p>\n<h4><b>Warnings<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>The host(s) can issue a verbal warning to a participant that their behavior violates the venue\u2019s anti-harassment policy. Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1jiYtUZ2syIwrFuE6s4OJMzw5g0FZgQCzsW3uMyfpCl4\/edit#\">CoC Incident Report<\/a> form to record all reported Code of Conduct violations. This form is on hand at all SDBS venues and events.<\/p>\n<p>Warnings should be reported to hosts@sundownblues.com as soon as practical, and contain all the information in the Incident Report Form.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Expulsion<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>A participant may be expelled by the host(s) for whatever reasons they deem sufficient. However, here are some general guidelines for when a participant should be expelled:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Three separate offenses each which resulted in a warning from a staff member.<\/li>\n<li>Continuing to harass after any &#8220;No&#8221; or &#8220;Stop&#8221; instruction.<\/li>\n<li>A pattern of harassing behavior, with or without warnings.<\/li>\n<li>A single serious offense (e.g., punching or groping someone).<\/li>\n<li>A single obviously intentional offense (e.g., taking up-skirt photos).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The length of the expulsion is decided by the host(s). To make this decision the host(s) should take into consideration the severity of the offense and the history of past offenses, if any.<\/p>\n<p>Expulsion options are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One week. Allowed to return the following week.<\/li>\n<li>One month. Allowed to return after four weeks.<\/li>\n<li>One year. Allowed to return after one year.<\/li>\n<li>Permanently.
